Juris Zvirgzdins nominated for the Italian Literary Prize “Premio Strega” / Article

The title of the book in Italian is ‘Rinoceronte alla riscossa’ and so on published by children’s book publishing house “Sinnos”. The first edition in Latvian was published in the publishing house “Liels un mazs” in 2011 with illustrations by Reinis Pētersons.

Premio Strega is Italy’s most prestigious literary prize, awarded since 1947. The award was established by writers Maria Bellonci and Guido Alberti, the owner of the Strega liqueur business. The name of the company is associated with Benevento’s magic (witch) stories.

European Premio Strega, Youth Premio Strega and Children’s Premio Strega are also currently being served. The Children’s Prize is being awarded for the 6th time (since 2016) and is awarded to books published in Italy, including translations. About a thousand children from 6 to 15 years of age from 100 schools and library readers’ groups are involved in selecting the winners. Finalists in 3 age groups have been announced: 6+, 8+, 11+. Juris Zvirgzdiņš’s book has been nominated for the final in category 8+, where it competes with the original literary work written by Italian writer Alessandro Barbaglia, “Scacco matto tra le stelle” and the book “Bjarne Reuter, Elise e il cane di seconda” by Danish author mine ”.

Illustrations by the artist Reinis Pētersons have also been preserved for the Italian edition, the design of the cover has been changed. The winner will be named during this year’s Rome Book Fair in early December. Writer Juris Zvirgzdiņš and translator Margerita Karbonaro have been invited to participate in the award ceremony.
