Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp said his team made the “wrong kind” of history, by defeating Aston Villa in the Premier League.

Liverpool lost 7-2. He is the first title holder to concede seven goals in a league match, since Sunderland’s 7-1 victory over Arsenal in September 1953.

Ole Watkins scored a hat-trick, while Jack Grealish scored five goals – scoring two and making three – as Liverpool suffered only their fourth Premier League defeat since January 2019.

Liverpool won their first title in 20 years last season, ending the season 18 points ahead of their closest competitor, Manchester City.

Mohamed Salah scored both goals for Liverpool, but Aston Villa, led by coach Dean Smith, beat the defending champion at Villa Park.

“Who wants to lose 7-2?” Klopp told the BBC. “Years ago we told ourselves that we wanted to make history. That was history, but it is clearly the wrong kind.”

He added, “We had great chances that we did not take advantage of, but when you allowed seven goals to be scored in your goal, I am not sure that it can be said that the result would have been 7-7.”

Klopp said, “We made a lot of mistakes, and obviously huge mistakes. It started with the first goal, and around (the rest) we made big mistakes.”

“We lost balls in the wrong area, and we didn’t defend properly. It looked like we had lost the ability to keep up after the score was 1-0. That’s not an excuse.”

“Usually you can be 1-0 late and do what you want to do. We were made but we didn’t protect ourselves properly so every ball we lost was a massive counterattack.”

Liverpool’s first goalkeeper, Alison Baker, missed the match due to a shoulder injury, as his substitute Adrian gifted Villa’s first goal.

Klopp revealed that the Brazilian Baker will not return immediately after the international suspension.

“It’s going to be a long time. It looks like it will take a few weeks, but we’ll see,” Klopp said.
