Football International

The German football world seems to have been turned upside down even before the home European Championships begin in June. At the beginning of January, the deaths of legend Franz Beckenbauer and Hertha President Kay Bernstein shocked football fans across the country.

The next bad news didn’t take long to arrive, although it is far less dramatic in comparison: On January 26th, Jürgen Klopp informed the world that he would be leaving Liverpool FC at the end of the season. Although this news did not concern German football per se, it certainly interested fans in this country. But not all details in this context were apparently intended for the public.

Jürgen Klopp sees personal rights violated by reports

In a press release from February 6th, the lawyer Christian Schertz from Berlin pointed out that he would represent Jürgen Klopp in personal law matters in the future. “Due to current circumstances,” his law firm asks that the 56-year-old trainer’s privacy be protected.

The background is a report from “Bunten”, which recently reported in detail about the private life of Klopp and his wife. Among other things, it contained extensive details about the size and value of a shared house.

The press release now describes the relevant reports as “blatantly illegal”. General personal rights protect, among other things, against the disclosure of private life circumstances without the consent of the person concerned.

Lawyers defend Jürgen Klopp in the dispute against “Bunte”

In this context, lawyer Schertz states that legal action has been taken against the magazine and the associated publisher Hubert Burda Media. The case should also deter other German media from publishing further reports about Klopp’s private life.

The Schertz Bergmann law firm was already noticed in the German press last summer. After allegations against Rammstein singer Till Lindemann, the lawyers had obtained an injunction against several media outlets, through which the reporting on the case decreased significantly.

With the announcement of his departure from Liverpool, Klopp initially fueled many rumors about possible next positions, and several experts also brought up the national coaching position after the home European Championship. “I’ll be happy when I don’t have to do that anymore,” Jürgen Klopp made it clear a short time later, meaning he wouldn’t be coaching a team at all next year.

Overall, the Stuttgart native was actually keen that the public should continue to focus on the sport and not on his own private life. “Nobody should make sure that the games are now about me. Please don’t do that,” he recently emphasized on the sidelines of a Liverpool game.

After seven years at BVB, Klopp achieved his greatest coaching successes with the English Premier League giants. Despite all requests, a corresponding number of reports about him are expected by the end of the season in May at the latest.

Lewis Hamilton is still a long way from racing for Ferrari, but the seven-time world champion’s commitment to the Italian racing team has already paid off.
