Jürg Stahl: “Impossible to organize the Games this summer”

Swiss Olympic in turn requests the postponement of the Tokyo Games. They must take place from July 24 to August 9.

After a meeting of its Executive Committee, Swiss Olympic delivered a letter to this effect to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

“Our athletes are currently facing difficult training conditions due to the coronavirus pandemic. In addition, some countries have now canceled their participation in the Olympic Games,” said Swiss Olympic President Jürg Stahl. “It is not possible to organize universal and fair Olympic Games which are in line with the Olympic Movement. This is the reason why we have requested a postponement.”

Swiss Olympic had already written a letter to the IOC on Sunday to communicate its position on the holding of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. The umbrella body of Swiss sport supported the view that the Summer Games should not take place this summer, the coronavirus pandemic should continue. “We are convinced that the final decision of the IOC will be taken in the interest of athletes, international sport and the Olympic Movement,” continues Jürg Stahl.

Before this letter was officially sent to the IOC, Swiss Olympic had launched a survey of its athletes to find out their opinion on the holding of the Tokyo Games. The results of this survey will be sent to the IOC. “It is important to give a voice to the athletes, says Chef de Mission Ralph Stöckli. They are the first to be affected by this situation.”
