Jupiter’s Appearance and Taurid Meteor Shower: Space Phenomena on November 3, 2023

Space phenomena occurred on Friday evening, November 3 2023. One of these phenomena was the appearance of one of the planets in the Solar System, namely Jupiter. Jupiter is the largest planet, 11 times larger than Earth.

In response to this, BMKG Region I Medan operated its best telescope to capture images of the planet Jupiter.

Hanif and Azhar, who are astronomical observers from BMKG Medan, explained that Jupiter can be observed because it is located directly opposite the sun when viewed from Earth and makes its surface slightly brighter than usual.

“Jupiter may be clearly visible, but Uranus, the planet behind it, is a bit difficult, and requires a telescope with a stronger lens,” said Hanif.

Astronomically, the appearance of Jupiter, which was very close to Earth last night, was like a large, bright and pale yellow ball.

Azhar explained that Jupiter is under the Aries constellation system and is in the highest position.

Head of BMKG Medan, Hendro Nugroho, also added that this astronomical observation activity is routinely carried out to see celestial phenomena such as the new moon, eclipses and meteors.

Hendro added that around November 4 and 5 there were Taurid meteors moving in the sky, which is an interesting phenomenon, although it is quite difficult to catch it because the process of the Taurid meteor shower occurs so quickly.

It may be a little difficult for the public to see it directly, therefore, they can see the documentation produced directly on the BMKG Medan Instagram account (@infobmkgsumut).

“The phenomenon of Jupiter’s appearance is not related to potential disasters, so people do not need to panic about hoax information related to this matter,” he concluded.
