Jupiter to Shine Brightest of the Year This Saturday

get ready for a celestial spectacle this ⁣Saturday! Jupiter,‌ the king of ‍planets, will be putting on a dazzling show in the night sky.⁣ ‍Late in the ⁤evening, our solar systemS giant will be in direct opposition to the Sun, making ⁤it the brightest it will be⁢ all year.

Petr Horálek, an astronomer from the Institute of Physics in Opava, explains, “On Saturday, December 7, 2024, at 21:50 CET, the ‘royal’ planet Jupiter will be in so-called opposition with the Sun. It will therefore be on the opposite side of the sky ‌from the Sun, rising at dusk, ⁤setting at‌ dawn, highest above the horizon at‍ midnight. At this time, Jupiter will also be at⁣ its brightest, as ⁢due to the effective backscattering of solar radiation, much of the incoming sunlight⁢ will be ‘sent’ to its surface in our direction.”

Jupiter will be a standout sight, shining‌ brightly in the constellation Taurus. ⁤Even city dwellers‌ will be ⁢able to spot it with ⁢the naked eye. “Jupiter is an unmissable object⁢ high in ‌the⁣ Taurus ⁤constellation, easily visible even in overlit⁣ cities,”‌ says⁢ Horálek. “If people point even⁤ a small telescope⁣ at the planet or visit an observatory, they will see the flattened disk of the planet itself and the shining moons that accompany it.”

He adds, “In the⁣ plane around Jupiter, Io,⁢ Europa, ganymede and Callisto are already⁣ visible in ⁣the trihedron. In a larger telescope, we will find that the surface of gaseous Jupiter is⁢ covered‍ by ‌parallel ⁣dark and‌ light atmospheric bands.”

This⁢ celestial event‌ coincides⁢ with ‍an exciting mission to Jupiter.⁢ Last April,⁤ the European probe Juice⁤ (Jupiter‌ icy moon Explorer) embarked on an eight-year journey‌ to Jupiter and its icy moons. Czech scientists and technicians are playing a key role in this ⁢mission.

“They designed and with notable help from the Czech⁤ space industry built an electromagnetic wave analyzer at audible frequencies. They are also responsible for its management and processing of the data obtained. ⁣technicians ‍from ‌the Astronomical Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic assembled the device’s power supply,”‍ explains Horálek.

The Juice mission aims to explore Jupiter’s system and⁤ its icy moons, searching for signs of potential life.
