entertainment">The 53-year-old composer tells this in conversation with the ANP. “I feel like a fish in water,” says Holkenborg. “I get super creative with all the restrictions imposed on me by movie studios when I’m making music for a movie. I revive when someone sets my boundaries, then something explodes in my head.”

entertainment">The composer defines his options in consultation with a director. “I like to make the comparison with a painter. Some filmmakers want you to draw on canvas, others on glass. The next one says: you can only use two colors. That really stimulates my inspiration.”

Godzilla vs Kong

entertainment">Holkenborg has done many action movies in recent years, such as Deadpool, Justice League en Mad Max. Now it was the turn of Godzilla vs Kong, which will be in Dutch cinemas from Thursday. “I’m a big fan of the old monster movies, I can recite the dialogues of the classics from back to front. Both monsters have a long, rich history in Hollywood as well as in pop culture. I wanted to bring that feeling back into my soundtrack.”

entertainment">The Dutch musician believes that he has become better at making film music in recent years. “I now understand better how I should appeal to a gut feeling in the viewer with my contribution to the film,” he explains. “Music should seep through to you, you shouldn’t hear it too consciously. If you come out of the cinema and can tell me in sounds and colors how the music worked, then there was something wrong with the movie.”
