The golden dream lives on for the Junior crowns after the victory in the quarter-final drama against Switzerland.
On Thursday afternoon, the semi-final against the Czech Republic awaits – and a chance for revenge for last year’s defeat.
What: Junior WC, semi-finals.
Where: Scandinavium, Gothenburg.
When: Thursday at 3 p.m.
TV/Radio: TV6/Viaplay, SR P4.
Sweden’s path to the semi-finals: Latvia 6–0, Germany 5–0, Canada 2–0, Finland 4–5 e str, Switzerland (quarters) 3–2 e forl.
Czech Republic: Slovakia 2–6, Norway 8–1, USA 3–4 e str, Switzerland 4–2, Canada (quarters) 3–2.
Växjö talent stepped forward: The Czech Republic has three chains that all produce equivalent points. Goal and score king Jiri Kulich (4+4) leads the first chain, but against Canada it was the third chain and a Växjö talent that decided. Jakub Stancl scored two goals, the decisive one with eleven seconds left. Stancl has made six SHL games and one goal during the fall, but mostly stays in the J20 team.
Revanschläge: In last year’s tournament, Sweden fell in the semi-finals against the Czech Republic after extra time. The match winner then was Kulich, who has played an NHL game for Buffalo this fall but on a daily basis resides in the farm team Springfield.
Chasing third gold: Sweden has only two JVM golds of all time, in 1981 and 2012. The last Swedish JVM final was in Buffalo in 2018 when Canada won 3–1. The Czech Republic lost to Canada in the final last year and, just like Sweden, has two golds all-time, the most recent in 2001.
The other semi-final: USA–Finland (SVT2 at 19.30).
