Junior World Cup: Lane Hutson and the United States defeat Finland

The United States won its first game of the preseason 5-2 over Finland at the World Junior Hockey Championship on Monday.

Team USA will face Sweden in their second and final game before the tournament proper.

Finland broke the ice in the first period when Trey Augustine conceded a bad goal to Jimi Soumi, before seeing their opponents equalize.

Charlie Stramel gave the Americans a lead in the second period, then defender Ryan Ufko extended the lead with a spot kick.

Ryan Chesley made it 4-1 with a single half on a good play started by Montreal Canadiens prospect Lane Hutson.

Another CH hope was signaled as Oliver Kapanen brought Finland closer to 4-2, except Logan Cooley restored a three-goal priority by scoring into an empty net.

The United States and Finland will meet on December 31 in the preliminary round of Group B, which also includes Latvia, Slovakia and Switzerland.

The two clubs did not meet in the 2022 edition which was resumed this summer, but Finland won 5-2 in a preseason match on 5 August.
