[Zhan Jianquan/Comprehensive Report]With his outstanding performance, two-time champion Alexander Zverev defeated the former world champion 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4 in the ATP Finals. Spanish star Carlos Alcaraz, thereby ruining Alcaraz’s debut in the ATP Year-End Finals.

Junior Verizi is making his sixth appearance at the prestigious year-end event, having previously won the title in Turin in 2021 and London in 2018. The younger Diverev used his experience to good effect against Ekaraz, keeping his composure on serve. Won the first win in the first game of the red group.

“My serve helped me a lot. Saving break point in the first game of the second set helped me a lot,” Diverev Jr. said. “You don’t want to drop a set against the No. 2 player in the world and break serve, so I am very happy.”

After squandering a break advantage in the first set, the world number seven remained positive and his depth and consistency in the second and third sets caused Ekaraz’s attack to stall. The 27-year-old Diverev won 79% of his first-serve points (59/75) and recovered from a heavy fall on his left ankle in the third set to win in two hours and 32 minutes.

Junior Diverev missed last year’s event due to a right ankle injury sustained during the 2022 French Open quarter-finals against Rafeal Nadal. He walked gingerly between points in the final stages of the match on Monday after suffering another slump on his left ankle against Alkaraz, but continued to improve to 13-8 in the ATP year-end finals.

Alkaraz is chasing his seventh title of the season and first since winning his second major trophy at Wimbledon in July.
