When the Disneyland theme park in Anaheim opened its doors on July 17, 1955, “Jungle Cruise” was one of the first major attractions. “Since the park opened, ‘Jungle Cruise’ has been Walt Disney’s baby. Now it was made into a movie and there were tons of reasons to be there,” Dwayne told The Rock “Johnson” at a press conference for the theatrical release of ” Jungle Cruise “on July 29th (one day later the film can be seen with VIP access on Disney +). While a ride on the “Jungle Cruise” in Disneyland is quite a relaxed affair, the film is more like a wild rollercoaster ride.
Jungle Cruise: Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt in search of a panacea
“The Rock” plays captain Frank Wolff, who earned his living with boat tours for tourists on the Amazon during the First World War. In the style of a stand-up comedian, Wolff entertains his guests with puns, more or less funny jokes and fictitious attacks by indigenous people. So he pulls the one or the other extra dollar out of the pocket of the vacationers. However, the business of the charming impostor and soldier of fortune is not really going well. His financier Nilo (Paul Giamatti) sits on his neck and demands his money back.
So it is a good thing that one day Dr. Lily Houghton (Emily Blunt) stands in front of Frank’s door. The tough scientist from London is looking for a captain who will ship her and her brother for a decent payment across the Amazon deep into the unexplored rainforest. Because Houghton is looking for a legendary tree. Its leaves, the “tears of the moon”, are said to cure almost all diseases.

However, a German expedition led by Prince Joachim (Jesse Plemons) is also targeting the tree, which is also sailing the Amazon with a heavily armed submarine. The Germans, who speak a rather funny mix of German and English in the original language, hope to be able to win the First World War through the blossoms of the tree. And so a race develops between Frank Wolff’s small steamship “La Quila” and the German submarine.
“Jungle Cruise” is a classic adventure film for the whole family that mixes quite a few genres. The film, which Dwayne Johnson also produced, is largely an action-packed comedy. But there are also fantasy, mystery and even a little horror in it, which is why one or the other place might be too scary for very young viewers. The FSK released the film from the age of twelve.
Emily Blunt is the feminine answer to “Indiana Jones”
If you like “Tomb Raider”, “The Mummy”, “Jumanji” or “Pirates of the Caribbean”, you can also watch “Jungle Cruise” without hesitation. “Indiana Jones” can of course also be used as a reference, in which case the heroine is female. Emily Blunt plays with Dr. Lily Houghton a woman who is way ahead of her time, who wears pants, is afraid of almost nothing and also fights with men. Especially Blunt’s interplay with Dwayne Johnson drives the film.
That Disney is trying to make its blockbusters more diverse is also shown by the role of Houghton’s brother MacGregor (Jack Whitehall). At first this seems to be just the clumsy sidekick typical of this type of film, stumbling from one embarrassment to the next. But when he comes out during a conversation with Frank Wolff at the campfire, he receives a lot of encouragement in the further course of the film and is also more involved in the plot.
Director Jaume Collet-Serra wants to entertain the whole family
In addition to exotic and magnificently staged locations, another strength of “Jungle Cruise” is the charismatic villain Prince Joachim, whom Jesse Plemons plays very convincingly. The character’s linguistic wit, which is both evil and funny, will hopefully also work in the German dubbing.
All in all, “Jungle Cruise” is a typical summer blockbuster that is easy to entertain. And it works so well precisely because he doesn’t take himself too seriously. “I just want people to have a good time,” said director Jaume Collet-Serra: “We all need an excuse every now and then and just good entertainment. The film is made for the whole family. That everyone can watch the film together look is the goal. ” And that’s exactly how the movie feels. Like a visit to Disneyland, including a roller coaster ride.
