Jung Yoo-jung: The Curiosity Killer from South Korea Sentenced to Life in Prison

A 23-year-old woman named Jung Yoo-jung from South Korea has been sentenced to life in prison after killing a stranger “out of curiosity”.

It reports BBC News.

Obsessed with true crime

Jung is said to have been obsessed with true crime series and books, and according to the police she should have scored high on several psychopath tests.

The 23-year-old searched for her victim on an online learning app before committing the murder, where she specifically looked for a teacher who offered private lessons.

Over 50 people were contacted by the 23-year-old. Most must have been women.

It was in May this year that Jung was approached by a 26-year-old woman who offered English lessons. The woman lived in the South Korean city of Busan.

Stabbed the victim over 100 times

Jung is said to have turned up at the woman’s place wearing a school uniform she had bought online, according to the prosecution.

After the 26-year-old let her in, convicted murderer Jung allegedly attacked the woman and stabbed her over 100 times – even after she was dead.

According to police reports, she then dismembered the body, packed the body parts in a suitcase – and took a taxi to a deserted area in the north of the city. There she is said to have dumped the remains of the 26-year-old.

The taxi driver quickly became aware of bloodstains coming from the suitcase, and thus tipped off the police right after he dropped the 23-year-old off, writes the BBC further.

Be careless

The police arrested Jung shortly after the driver’s report of concern. They say in a statement that Jung has been very careless: Several surveillance cameras have indeed captured the 23-year-old in the murdered 26-year-old’s home.

On Friday 24 November, the judge in the Busan District Court said the murder had “spread fear in the community”. This is because the unnamed 26-year-old was an accidental victim.

Jung confessed to the murder in June this year. At the time, she claimed that she had suffered from hallucinations and other mental disorders at the time of the crime, and therefore asked for a lighter sentence.

However, the court rejected the request on the basis that the murder was “carefully planned and carried out”.

Changed explanation several times

Convicted murderer Jung is also said to have changed his explanation several times. At first, she said she had moved the 26-year-old woman’s body, but that she was not the one who killed her. A short time later, she said that the murder was due to an argument between her and the deceased.

In the end, she admitted to being behind the murder, explaining that true crime series made her “interested in killing”.

The local police are said to have found several searches on Jung’s computer in the wake of the murder, where it emerged that she had spent several months reading up on “how to kill” and “how to get rid of a corpse”.

23-year-old Jung was sentenced to life in prison.
