This June will not be boring: In addition to our own symposium in two weeks on June 14th and 15th, we also have some event tips on the program for this week. All in all, this month there are numerous opportunities to visit exciting projects and get to know current temporary uses. And did we mention our symposium?
Invitation to the symposium: register now!
On Wednesday, June 14th and Thursday, June 15th, 2023, we are organizing this in cooperation with the Vienna Business Agency Symposium CIRCULAR POTENTIALS – added value of vacancy activation.
Day 1 is aimed at invited experts from the areas of municipal administration, real estate management, space companies as well as research and science. The keynote speeches by representatives of exciting projects from Bremen, Berlin, Riga, St. Gallen, Ebeltoft and Vienna are accessible online to everyone. The link will be available on our site on the day of the event. Day 2 is aimed at all interested parties with the motto ‘Possibility spaces for Vienna – creative use of vacancies’.
Informative impulse lectures, in-depth panel sessions and an excursion to current temporary use projects in Vienna together with the team of the creative spaces Vienna are offered. On Thursday, June 15, at 7 p.m., there will be an exciting panel discussion on the subject of ‘Opportunities for Vienna – creative use of vacancies’ in the ballroom of WEST/alte WU. Before that, there will be a lecture by Angelika Psenner (Professor of Urban Planning, Vienna University of Technology) and a guided tour of the WEST interim use project.
- For the Participation in the excursion and the panel discussion we ask you to register here. Attention: The excursion is almost fully booked.
- Here there are Program overview with registration option for the public part.
- Here it also goes to Facebook event.
At this point many thanks to our cooperation partners from grätzlhotel x Urbanauts. Urbanauts transforms formerly vacant business premises into hotel rooms – and that in several districts of Vienna. We are pleased that we can accommodate our guests for the symposium in the Grätzlhotels.

Discussion: Temporary use – and then?
The Raumstation collective would like to initiate a discussion with the series of events “Z Zwischen interuse – and then?”: The Althangrund is a utopia that has fallen out of time. At the same time, the area around the old WU harbors huge potential, because open spaces are also becoming scarcer in Vienna. Against the background of the climate crisis, we have to radically rethink how we deal with existing buildings like these.
A first panel discussion and a game on June 1 will deal with the opportunities and limits of temporary use. On the podium: Ula Schneider (SOHO in Ottakring/Vienna creative spaces), Alisa Beck and Marie-Christin Rissinger (formerly mo.e) and intermediate users from Althangrund.
WHEN: Thursday, June 1, 2023, 7 p.m
WHERE: Althangrund Cultural Center, Augasse 2-6, 1090

Never at Home x Foto Wien: Invisible Obvious
On Friday, June 2nd, Never At Home and FOTO WIEN invite you to the Vernissage #1 INVISIBLE OBVIOUS. It is about the artistic combination of socio-political themes between art and urbanity. Through this connection, Never at Home supports the visualization of vacancies in the city. With the photographic examination, this is once again brought into focus and the topic of “transparency in urban structures” is illuminated on several levels.
Never at Home is an initiative of young creative people that shows and uses the potential of temporary use of real estate for artistic processes. Never at Home is currently playing in the former office and industrial building on Sachsenplatz in Vienna’s 20th district.
WHEN: Vernissage on Friday, June 2, 2023, 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m
WHERE: Never At Home / Sachsenplatz 4-6 / 1200 Vienna
The exhibited works can be visited during the opening times from 3 to 11 June, Wed-Sun 3-6 p.m.

Independent Space Index: The Festival of Project Spaces in Vienna
Independent Viennese art spaces are organizing an open house together this weekend – city-wide. The participating rooms are open from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. and show current exhibitions that can be visited free of charge and without prior registration. In many of these rooms, openings and other events also take place in the evenings. Definitely a recommendation for the weekend!
What is the Independent Space Index? The network of artist run, non-commercial and independent art spaces (also called “off-spaces” or “alternative spaces”) was founded in Vienna in 2017. Currently 83 rooms are listed. The resulting public directory of the rooms has developed into an important research tool for current artistic practice in Vienna.
WHEN: Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 2-4 June I 2 to 6 p.m
WHERE: project rooms/off-spaces throughout Vienna
