/ world today news/ Prime Minister Boyko Borissov leaves for an urgent visit to Brussels at the “invitation” of Juncker.
On December 4, the prime minister will hold a meeting with the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, the government information service announced.
Later in the day, the program for the visit foresees talks between the Prime Minister and the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz. During his visit to Brussels, Prime Minister Borissov will also meet with the chairman of the EPP, Joseph Doll.
Juncker himself has already announced that the main topic of the meeting with the Bulgarian Prime Minister will be Russia’s rejection of the South Stream project. The head of the EC refused to comment on Russia’s decision. “For now, I will not speak on this issue. I have to hold consultations with the commissioners responsible for this file, and tomorrow I will meet with Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borissov to discuss this topic,” added Jean-Claude Juncker.
Among the EU countries, Bulgaria suffered the most from the suspension of the South Stream project. According to preliminary estimates, Sofia has lost around 400 million euros per year as lost benefits from the income for gas transit on “South Stream”. At the same time, the European Commission stated that Sofia cannot hope for compensation from Brussels for the losses.
