Authority Peru reported 2 soldiers jumping into a frozen river while being chased by anti-government protesters. As a result, the 2 soldiers died.
Reported AFP, Tuesday (7/3/2023), the 2 soldiers ran away from the masses who attacked them with slingshots and sticks. Protesters oppose the government of President Dina Boluarte in Ilave City, Puno, on Sunday (7/3/2023).
The two soldiers were Franz Canazas and Alex Quispe. Their bodies were found in the Ilave river, which borders Peru and Bolivia.
Apart from Franz and Alex, it is known that 4 other soldiers are still missing. The four also jumped into the Ilave River.
The search is continuing “without interruption and will not end until all the missing soldiers are found,” Peru’s Ministry of Defense said.
Meanwhile, local residents rescued 5 other soldiers who also jumped into the river. All five soldiers were suffering from hypothermia.
It is known, on Saturday (4/3), 16 people, including civilians and soldiers, were injured in clashes between protesters and the military in Ilave.
Peru has now been hit by massive demonstrations since former president Pedro Castillo was overthrown and arrested on December 7, 2022. Pedro was arrested after trying to dissolve the parliament and government by decree.
Pedro’s supporters, demanding Boluarte’s resignation. They also demanded re-election.
At least 50 people have been killed and more than 600 injured in clashes between protesters and Peruvian security forces in the last three months.
