Jump from summer to winter: the Czech Republic reports the first snow | iRADIO

After the tropical last week, the Czech Republic received its first snow on Thursday. In the morning, white dust covered the mountains in Šumava, where temperatures dropped to zero. It snowed on both the Czech and German sides of the mountains.

“The cooling came to the Šumava already around midnight, when it cooled sharply. The temperature then dropped to zero in the morning, around seven o’clock. Rainfall turned into snow and a weak snow cover formed in locations above 1,200 meters above sea level,” amateur meteorologist Ivo Rolčík, who has been monitoring the weather in the Šumava for a long time, describes for iROZHLAS.cz.

According to him, the highest covering measured two centimeters on both the Czech and German sides. “The most snow fell on the Czech side of the Šumava on the peaks of Plechý, Blatný vrch and Boubín,” enumerates Rolčík. On the German side, it snowed the most on Velký Javor, which is the highest mountain in Šumava and is located a few kilometers from the border with the Czech Republic.

But the snow did not last long on the ridges. Within an hour or two the temperatures had risen again and the white blanket began to thaw rapidly.

According to Rolčík, snow in mid-September is not completely unusual. “About once every three years, it happens that snow falls even in mid-September. Last year it was only in mid-October and the year before last it was September 19, i.e. a week later than now,” Rolčík adds.

According to him, snow could also appear on the ridges of the mountains in the following days. “Due to precipitation and further cooling, there could be even more snow from Friday to Saturday than now, but it is difficult to estimate how much the temperature will drop to zero. After that, however, it will warm up significantly again, so the snow will melt again very quickly,” he explains what the weather will be like in the mountains there.

“It will be like on a swing. There will be a lot of precipitation, there will be rain for a while, then snow again and then rain again,” concludes Rolčík.
