Jumbo’s Troubles in the Belgian Retail Market: Challenges, Acquisitions, and Changing Dynamics

At the presentation of its half-year figures, Jumbo indicated that it wanted to focus again on its fundamentals. Choices will also have to be made in Belgium, says Pierre-Alexandre Billiet, CEO of Gondola.

The complex situation in the Belgian retail market has certainly not helped Jumbo.

The Dutch retailer has to deal with numerous problems, starting with the corona pandemic, which has significantly slowed down the expansion of its network in Flanders. But other factors are also at play, such as the fundamentally unclear positioning in Belgium, a country where the pace of change is accelerating. But there is also the increasing internal complexity with the acquisition of La Place, the exceptional growth of the past, the new logistics center and all the changes that continue to drive up costs. Jumbo is clearly in troubled waters: at the Dutch family business, both the family and the company have problems.
