O Santos agreed to hire Argentine striker Julio César Furch, last Wednesday (12). The 33-year-old player was one of the names analyzed by the board, and approved by coach Paulo Turra.
That he is an experienced player, with passages through the Argentine teams San Lorenzo, Belgrano, Olimpo and Arsenal, in addition to the Mexican Veracruz, Santos Laguna and Atlas, you already knew. Also, at 1.88 tall, good in the air and in the pivot, he fits as an alternative for the attack, regardless of a possible departure of Marcos Leonardo.
But, and that he is responsible for Atlas opening a bottle of Whiskey kept for almost 70 years, did you know? It explains:
Atlas had been Mexican champions in 1951, their first and only national title until then. In 1954, the club was presented with a bottle of Ballantine’s Scotch whiskey by the city of Guadalajara. O gift however, it could only be opened on condition that it was a celebration of an elite title. The bottle box even had the handwriting “Property of Club Deportivo Atlas de Guadalajara to be opened when the team wins a First Division championship”.
The club was runner-up in 1966, and won the Mexico Cup in ’62 and ’68, as well as the second division a few times, but the whiskey was saved for bigger triumphs. Over the years, the bottle gained such notoriety that it ended up being displayed next to the first glass in the club’s museum, and caught the attention of those who visited the place.
The second star was won on December 12, 2021, in the Apertura Tournament of Liga MX, with a 1-0 victory over León in normal time and 4-3 in the penalty shootout, with Julio Furch taking the decisive penalty. In celebration, the bottle was finally opened.
