The infectologist and member of the advisory commission on health of the National Assembly, Julio Castro, rejected the proposals to use homeopathic treatments and chlorine dioxide as part of the therapeutic scheme for COVID-19 patients In Venezuela.

This was expressed this Sunday, July 5, on his Twitter account after questioning the Health Minister of the Nicolás Maduro administration, Carlos Alvarado.

The latter said that they are evaluating “including some treatments recommended by a committee of alternative medicines; homeopathic treatments they are inexpensive and can be used massively ”, and mentioned the use of chlorine dioxide.

This last proposal is under evaluation, and according to Alvarado it is applied “with some effectiveness” in other countries.

Suspended for ineffective

Castro warned that “treatment with chlorine derivatives was suspended worldwide for being ineffective”, while regarding homeopathy, he described it as “pseudoscience”.

“Using drugs outside of science is intrusiveness and pseudoscience,” said the Venezuelan infectologist who signed an agreement with the AN for the Ministry of Health to work together, the Executive and Legislative powers, to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus in the country.

Alvarado offered details on the therapeutic schemes that are applied in Venezuela, during the daily balance of cases of COVID-19 that was carried out this Sunday.

He explained that chloroquine is used, a mixture of two antivirals and the Cuban Interferon, which they administer to positive patients with the rapid test and symptoms.

Now they will apply it “long before the PCR arrives given the complications,” said the Maduro official.

While Castro added that the therapeutic committee to know what medications can be administered to patients with coronavirus, “it must be made up of medical societies that do treat patients.”

More PCR and less PDR

The specialist also questioned the words of Maduro and Alvarado, who criticized that people with symptoms associated with virus SARS-CoV-2 They come late to have a diagnosis, which deteriorates the health of patients and leads to an increased risk of death.

“People come late for criminalization, lack of access, poor health system,” Castro recalled.

In addition, he criticized the insistence on the application of PDR (rapid diagnosis) tests. And, that the centralization of the PCRs in the National Institute of Hygiene be maintained and no more of the latter be applied.
