Julien Stéphan back in Rennes: “At some point, you have to stop, enough is enough!” Why the coach has bad memories of TFC

Julien Stéphan officially returns to Stade Rennais, which he coached between 2018 and 2021. Former coach Bruno Génésio was expected to stay, however, the club announced this (not so) new name this Sunday. His previous adventure in Rennes had started well but, in a bad situation on the accounting level, he had resigned. With Strasbourg, he was rejected after an equally delicate start to the 2022-2023 season, marked by media outings like against Toulouse.

A little over a year ago, on October 23, 2022, TFC welcomed Racing to the Stadium. The Alsatians almost overturned the match after being down two goals to nothing. Julien Stéphan had severely criticized the referee of the match Jérémy Stinat (whom he will meet again for his next match against Reims), believing that he had forgotten a penalty for his team in the final minutes: “It’s not the 1st time […] We haven’t said much so far. […] But at some point you have to stop. Enough is enough !”.

Sacked last January, the manager has not been on a bench for a long time. He nevertheless embodies hope for the Rouges et Noirs with whom he won, among other things, the 2019 Coupe de France, and finished on the podium in 2020. He left a less memorable memory in Toulouse for whom he played four matches when he was a professional player. It was during the 2001-2002 season, when the Violets were in the National. Well anchored in the elite since then, they will welcome J. Stéphan and the Rennais on December 17.
