Julie Van den Steen is currently causing a furore as a jury member in the VTM program The Masked Singer, alongside Karen Damen and Jens Dendoncker, and fans – rightly – like to see her at work. “The new one on VTM” she describes herself on Instagram, but in the meantime she seems to have become a fixture for many.
Van den Steen seems visibly happy, judging from interviews and her social media, but that it was not always rosy and moonlit, she said in a frank conversation with Dag Allemaal. As a teenager she was badly bullied.
“Feeling that I can’t do anything”
“I felt trapped, was bullied for being overweight, laughed at because my mother, born in Congo and raised in French and West Flemish, had a strange accent. That is why some children were not even allowed to play with me by their parents, ”she says. “If I still often feel the ‘abnormal’ today, it’s because of my youth.”
“I actually have the feeling that I cannot do anything, that I am constantly swindling people and that someday someone will expose me. How ironic that I now have to unmask other private companies every day ”, she wrote in a playful way in the weekly.
