President Joe Biden plans to appoint his adviser Julie Rodriguez to lead his re-election campaign, a person familiar with the deliberations on the matter said Sunday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Rodriguez’s appointment has not yet been finalized and Biden has yet to formally kick off his re-election campaign. CBS News was the first outlet to report that the president had decided to choose Rodriguez.
She has served as director of the White House Office of Intergovernmental Affairs with Biden since the start of his presidency, adding the position of senior adviser last June. She also worked in the White House during Barack Obama’s tenure. She is the granddaughter of labor leader César Chávez and labor activist Helen Fabela Chávez.
Rodriguez, a longtime Democratic Party activist, has a close relationship with Vice President Kamala Harris. She served on Harris’s Senate staff and his 2020 presidential campaign as national political director and chief of staff. She was subsequently hired by the 2020 Biden presidential campaign as deputy campaign manager and Latino community outreach advisor.
During his youth in California he was active in campaigns, strike lines, boycotts, marches and union meetings.
Biden is expected to formally announce his 2024 re-election campaign as early as this week, according to three people familiar with the deliberations.
The people, who spoke on condition of anonymity so they could disclose internal discussions, said they were not aware that a decision had been made on the timing of the announcement, but that Biden had been thinking about Tuesday, April 25. to make it known, exactly four years after the Democrat entered the 2020 race. The next announcement is expected to be through a video sent to his supporters.
Biden, 80, has repeatedly said he intends to run for a second term, but aides say he is in little urgency to start his campaign because he does not face significant opposition to the party’s nomination.
