Julie Deliquet’s Adaptation of Frederick Wiseman’s ‘Welfare’ Makes Waves at Théâtre Gérard Philipe

Julie Deliquet showed incredible courage by adapting for the stage one of the great documentaries by the genius of the genre, Frederick Wiseman, “Welfare”. Especially since before being on the bill at the Théâtre Gérard Philipe in Saint-Denis, at the end of September, his show opened the last Avignon Festival, in the open air, in the imposing courtyard of the Popes’ Palace. Revised in dramatic mode, under the stars, this hyper-realistic dive into the daily life of a social assistance center in New York at the end of 1973 has unfortunately left us unmoved.
