Nearly six months after his disappearance in the mountains of California, Julian Sands has finally been pronounced dead. The body found at the site days ago is that of the missing British actor. “The process of identifying the body … has been completed and it has been positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands,” the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Office said, according to the Guardian.
The actor went missing in the San Gabriel Mountains on January 13. Bad weather during the winter months hampered rescuers trying to find Sands, hampering the search for long periods.
Actor Julian Sands, who starred in several Oscar-nominated films, has been missing for five days in the mountains of Southern California, where he was hiking, the Associated Press reported, citing local authorities.
Last week, the sheriff’s office said it was scaling back the search after a renewed effort involving more than 80 people on June 17 failed.
Soon after, and days before the remains were found, Sands’ family issued their first statement in four months, saying they were “deeply grateful” to the crews and that they continued to hold the actor “in their hearts” with fond memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of nature and the arts, and an original and cooperative performer.”
Julian Sands was born in Yorkshire and grew up in England, in a family of five children raised by a single mother. He has over 150 roles in film and television. In 1985, he starred opposite Helena Bonham Carter in A Room With a View, a romantic drama directed by James Ivory that won three awards and eight Oscar nominations. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he also played central roles in “Magician”, “Gothic”, “Arachnophobia”, “Naked Lunch”, “Elena in a Box”. Interview with the Vampire author Anne Rice wanted him to play the lead role in the Hollywood adaptation of her novel, but the role of the bloodsucker Lestat went to Tom Cruise.
Since 1995’s Leaving Las Vegas, which brought Nicolas Cage an Oscar for Best Actor, Sands has appeared primarily in smaller film and television roles. Among the more famous titles with his participation are “Million Dollar Hotel” by Wim Wenders and “The Phantom of the Opera” by Dario Argento.
Sands’ love of mountain climbing and hiking is well known. He admitted to the Guardian that he was happiest when he was “near a mountain top on a glorious cold morning”. “I was looking for something exotic, things that take me out of myself,” he said in an interview with the English newspaper in 2018. “I think I turned out to be a bit boring.”
