Julia Debord-Dany, designer taking on New York

The visual artist and designer Saint-Étienne Julia Debord-Dany, who was a student at the Higher School of Art and Design Saint-Étienne (Ésadse), has been announced as selected for a residency at the Villa Albertine in New York in 2025.

To spread French design

From the workshop located in the former building of the School of Fine ArtsJulia Debord-Dany is preparing to leave next April for the Big Apple.

At only 31 years old, she one of about 60 international artists who have obtained residency in the United Statesthrough the Villa Albertine. This residency program, dedicated to the support and dissemination of French creation, was established by France in 2021.

“Design schools ask students and former students to apply for a specific project. The Esadse promised for me and, fortunately, I was accepted. It’s a great opportunity”says the man who lives in the heart of Brooklyn, in Industry City, in the startup area.

Looking for the right products

I then think of a series of things. »

Saint-Étienne, heart city

The designer, born to a father from Auvergne and a mother from Reunion, has been drawing and sculpting. After high school, she chose law for a while but, with a passion for archaeology, she quickly changed her path to art history. “I liked the practice so much that I did art school exams. »

In 2013, she joined Ésadsefrom which she will graduate in 2019. Those years are still etched in her memory: “It was unbelievable. In this school, the paths are different according to the students. There is no format, as is the case in other schools. »

Regarding the city: “I like it a lot. She has amazing energy. After my graduation, I found wonderful working conditions and people here. »
