If all Angevins know the famous shopping street in his name, the Angevin artist Jules-Eugène Lenepveu is however unknown to the general public. After several years of meticulous work, the teams of the Museum of Fine Arts of Angers present from this Friday, June 24 an exhibition dedicated to Jules-Eugène Lenepveu, draftsman and painter of history, but also author of large decorations , civil and religious.
For this unprecedented exhibition, 260 works have been brought together, including drawings very rarely exhibited, thanks to loans from individuals and institutions. ” We have more than 1,000 works in Angers by this artist who has always been very attached to his hometown “, explains Anne Esnault, director of the museums of Angers.

At the Museum of Fine Arts, the public will discover throughout the course the training of the artist, his major public or religious commissions, through his favorite themes and his entourage. This exhibition, spread over three spaces, the temporary exhibition hall of 50 m², part of the last room of the Fine Arts course and the graphic arts cabinet, will be completed by digital devices that will allow the discovery at 360° sets made by Jules-Eugène Lenepveu. ” We wanted to evoke his multiple activities and show the diversity of his career adds Anne Esnault.

An artist very present in Angers
With this unprecedented exhibition, the public will discover the works of this artist still visible today in Angers. Jules-Eugène Lenepveu thus painted religious scenes in the Sainte-Marie chapel of the University Hospital of Angers. Angers also owes him the magnificent ceiling of the Grand Théâtre located on Place du Ralliement and a historical composition created for the museum. Nationally, he is known for having worked in national buildings in Paris (Louvre Museum, the Pantheon, the Paris Opera, etc.)
