Julen Lopetegui is no longer the coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers. He agreed with the management of the English Premier League club to end cooperation only six days before the first game of the new season.
Lopetegui lasted only nine months on the Wolves bench. “The head coach and the club have recognized and accepted the differences of opinion in certain areas and agreed that the best solution for all parties would be to terminate the contract,” the club said in a statement reported by AFP.
As journalist Guillem Balague reported, the Spanish coach believed that he would strengthen his squad in the summer, but the club management did not allow him to sign new players. According to the BBC, he should be replaced by former Bournemouth coach Gary O’Neil. The Premier League season kicks off on Friday, August 11, with Wolves’ first game on Monday when they host Manchester United.
Lopetegui took the helm at Wolverhampton last November when the team were bottom of the table. Finally, he led him into calm waters in the middle of the league standings and finished with him in 13th place. In the past, he also led FC Porto, Real Madrid, FC Sevilla and the Spanish national team.
