Jula: Skiing here

Most of Norway is covered in snow and where there is snow there are also ski slopes.

However, you should avoid some places if you want to strap on your skis during Christmas.

– The exceptions are on the coast south of Stad, and further on in eastern Norway, Ingvild Villa, a meteorologist at the Meteorological Institute, tells Dagbladet.

Good skiing conditions

Mikael Gunnulfsen on Skisporet.no tells Dagbladet that the ski season has started well in most of the country.

– There is an incredible amount of activity in the track cars, there are a lot of people working there even if it is Christmas. In the mountains, today almost all the paths are new. There are freshly traveled trails over much of the country, Gunnulfsen says.

Parts of the country have not received much snow so far, but there are ski slopes in all parts of the country. In some places you still have to drive a bit to get to the ski slopes.

– Now it looks very nice on the map, it is possible to ski on most of the country. There are pretty good ski conditions all over the country, he says.

– Excellent start

The ski association says that everything that fell as rain on the lowlands of Eastern Norway arrived as snow on the mountains. They report excellent condition.

– It was a fantastic start to the ski season. There are excellent skiing opportunities in Oslomarka, says Trine Rom Giving, communications manager at the Ski Association, in Dagbladet.

He adds that they now expect it to get better and better.

Oslomarka and the surrounding areas is where the ski association organizes the ski runs.

– There may be slightly changeable conditions, because there have been changeable temperatures. On paths in the ground, twigs can stick together, but on forestry vehicle roads the conditions are very good, says Giving.

Both Vestmarka and Bærumsmarka plan to prepare more ski slopes soon.

Snow replenishment

Interviewed by Dagbladet, the meteorologist Villa crosses the country, part by part, to predict the future of skiing.

It’s already good to ski in and around Tromsø, and better able to Sara.

– In the next few days there will be enough snow north of Stad and Sør-Troms, says Villa.

Some might say that there is too much good, because until Sunday morning, Christmas day, there is a yellow alert for snow. Locally, between 20 and 40 centimeters of snow can fall in 24 hours, and local snowfall is expected in some locations.

– Applies to parts of Nordland and Sør-Troms.

There was heavy snow in Bodø on Christmas Eve and more is on the way.

– There will be some rain on Monday and Tuesday. Right now it’s a bit difficult to say in which format. At worst, rain, says meteorologist Villa.

A snow warning has also been issued in Trønder’s capital Trondheim.

– There is even snow up to the spring rock. There will be more snow today, and temperatures will remain cool tomorrow, says the meteorologist.

But when the weekend is over, snow turns to rain in Trondheim. There is no reason for despair yet.

– Regardless of rainfall, you probably won’t go high in the mountains or far into the country until you find good skiing, says meteorologist Villa.

In the plains around Stavanger there is no snow and no good prospects for skiers in the near future either.

However, there is a lingering weather forecast on Christmas Eve, but the joy will be short-lived.

– There will be precipitation in the form of rain on Sunday, says the meteorologist.

In Bergen, the picture is very similar, Villa says:

In Oslo it is possible to ski in many places in the field, and the capital will “perhaps” be “filled” with snow on Sunday.

– Eventually it becomes sleet, then it will rain on Monday, says the meteorologist.

Nor are large amounts of snow expected on Sunday.

– Maybe walking in the snow won’t be enough for you, but it will be more of a Christmas spirit, says Villa.

Further south, in Kristiansand, the picture is much the same, but a little clearer in the direction of the rain.

Christmas Eve should stay, but rain and more degrees will come from Sunday.
