Júki Cunoda will soon face a new challenge in the name of Daniel Ricciardo. If the Japanese manages to beat the Australian, it is possible that he will open the door to the “A” Red Bull and after 2024 – or even earlier – he will appear alongside Max Verstappen.
For now, however, the 23-year-old racer is fully focused on working in AlphaTauri and remains firmly on the ground. Of course, he would welcome a transfer to Red Bull, but he does not want to be distracted by considerations that lead nowhere.
“I’m happy to be a part of the Red Bull family,” he noted Kunoda pre Total-Motorsport.com. “I feel comfortable in AlphaTauri, I can be myself here. From the pilot’s point of view, it is good to register interest from other teams as well [o Cunodu prejavil smerom do budúcnosti záujem Aston Martin, pozn. red.]but so far I’m happy with AlphaTauri.”
“If there was an opportunity to move to Red Bull, it would of course be amazing. However, as I said, I’m not thinking about 2024 just yet, and there aren’t many reasons for me to leave AlphaTauri either.”
Things didn’t look good with Cunod after the premier’s unsuccessful season. In the second one, however, he was able to fully rehabilitate himself, when he was not enough for Pierre Gasly in terms of points, but in terms of speed – especially in qualifying – he was. In the current year, he managed to get the most out of the AT04 single-seater several times, he scored twice and regularly occupied eleventh or twelfth places, not to mention that he did not let his former teammate Nyck de Vries do absolutely nothing.
“Everyone tells me that in the second year of its operation [2022] I gained confidence,” the native of Sagamihara let himself be heard. “On the other hand, not many people followed my race. I’m Pierre in most of the qualifiers and in the dry [Gaslyho] was defeating. I trust myself. This year I was even more consistent in the races and in qualifying.”
