“Juice Jacking: A New Hacking Mode to be Careful of in Public Charging Stations – Kompas.com”

KOMPAS.com – Hacking mode (hacking) that can harm users continues to grow. Most recently, there is a hacking mode called Juice Jacking. In fact, the FBI (United States Investigative Agency) has warned to be careful of this mode.

This is because it is suspected that Juice Jacking can attack the user’s cellphone in places where it can be misused to facilitate hacking, such as public charging points at airports, hotels, and so on.

Seeing this new hacking mode, what exactly is Juice Jacking that can harm users without realizing it? For more details, here is an explanation of Juice Jacking.

What is Juice Jacking?

In general, Juice Jacking is a hacking method that is carried out by utilizing a USB port. As a hacking method, Juice Jacking is actually not a new term.

The term Juice Jacking was introduced in 2011 at DEFCON, the international hacker conference. The term Juice Jacking was introduced to warn users not to plug their devices into random charging stations.

This is because hacking can be done via a USB connection at a public charging facility. At the DEFCON 2011 event, to demonstrate Juice Jacking, a free charging station was provided and conference attendees were offered to charge there.

Quoted from Techtarget, when the cellphone is being charged at the station, a message suddenly appears warning not to charge anywhere because the cellphone can be infected with malicious code or software (malware).

The Juice Jacking action can be implemented in various places, including public charging facilities that are usually found at airports, hotels, and so on. Juice Jacking can be run through two devices, namely a USB port and a USB charging cable.

In running Juice Jacking, a hacker can use a USB port to transfer malware directly to a charging station. Or, you can also use a USB charging cable that has been infected with malware and hope that the cable is used by other users.

As is quite commonly known, a USB connection can not only be used for charging, but also for data transfer. The Juice Jacking hack will run when a user connects his cellphone to a USB connection that has been infected with malware.

If the USB connection is allowed for data transfer then hackers can send malware. Through malware that is sent via USB connection, hackers can control the user’s cellphone and steal personal data that is in it.

The Juice Jacking hacking method can be said to be quite difficult to recognize. With the naked eye, users may find it difficult to distinguish which USB connections are safe and which are infected with malware.

The difficulty in distinguishing it is because the physical form of a USB infected with malware as a means of Juice Jacking itself looks like a USB in general. However, even though it is difficult to distinguish, that does not mean there is no way to prevent Juice Jacking.

If you are in a public place and want to charge at the free charging facilities available, here’s how to prevent Juice Jacking, as reported by the FCC (Federal Communications Commissions) website.

How to prevent Juice Jacking

  • Avoid charging via a USB port. Charging should be done through a power outlet using a cas adapter.
  • Always try to use your own USB cable.
  • Try to bring a special type of USB cable for charging, which can prevent data transfer when charging.
  • When the cellphone is connected to a USB port at a public charging place and the option “charge only” or “share data” appears, always select the “charge only” action to prevent unwanted data transfers.
