Judith Rodríguez shines with her vision of social cinema

SANTO DOMINGO. A visit to several impoverished communities in the Dominican capital and some provinces marked the actress and director Judith Rodríguez. When he met Marialy, a girl of only 13 years old with a baby in her arms, he made him choose to take a story to the cinema that calls for reflection.

Judith went back to betting on social issues from art; this time, with the proposal, under his direction, of the short documentary “From girl to girl”, a work done by Save The Children.

In an interview with Diario Libre, he said that it arises from the need to address the issue of the economic gap and the little support for the protection of girls and adolescents.

“From girl to girl” was presented, on March 11, in Color Vision, and was premiered on International Women’s Day.

Support for girls

Although it was conceived and directed by the actress, director and film producer, the initial idea was not to make a short documentary, but rather a prevention campaign as part of her work as an ambassador for Save The Children. “It is a dialogue between two girls of the same age, the difference is that one (Marialy) lives in Los Hoyos, in Haina, just 45 minutes from the National District, and Avril lives in Gascue,” she says.

The documentary shows the socioeconomic abyss that separates them, despite being in the same city. For example, Avril, who is not a mother, studies music and arts, but it is not the reality of the other, who is living as an adult. “This is happening in many of our communities,” she reflects sadly.

There, other topics such as gender, inequality, childhood, teenage pregnancies, poverty, public policies, and psychological impact on girls are addressed.

“Although Avril is not of upper economic class, she has more facilities than Marialy, who does not have drinking water in her house, for example. He has to go down to the river to look for her, ”says the“ Carpenters ”actress, and winner of the Sovereign awards for best actress.

The music is interpreted by the girl Avril Renée Lazala Guerrero in the same documentary, and is the renowned song “Mentira”, by the group Toque Profundo, composed by Tony Almont. Judith Rodríguez announced that they will take “From Girl to Girl” to schools and universities, and she is going to perform at a Spanish university. “We would like to take a tour of international festivals, but the goal of this short documentary is for the people to see it,” he told DL.

Other projects

The pandemic stopped Judith’s premiere schedule, but the “Cocote” interpreter was excited about what’s to come.

He is part of the cast “La vida de los reyes”, about Raymond Pozo and Miguel Céspedes, which is out this year. She will also be an actress and producer in “Rafaela”, under the direction of Tito Rodríguez, the first film from her production house. “Rafaela has me very excited. We hope to release soon ”.

But there is more: he filmed his first international film in Puerto Rico as the protagonist, by director Gustavo Ramos. On stage, he will return with his first monologue, under the direction of Vicente Santos.

Although Judith Rodríguez has excelled in dramatic films and won awards with them, she truly wants to do comedies. He defines himself as a very funny person and wants to exploit him in the movies.

Sobre Save The Children

“The short can show how our girls and adolescents living in poverty are doubly condemned: for being born in poverty and because of their gender,” said Alba Rodríguez, executive director of Save The Children.

Rodríguez maintains that he tried to do a work that does not show an adult and a child talking, but the aspiration of two minors, taking care of their integrity.

In the Dominican Republic, Save the Children has been working since 1972 as an independent organization in 11 provinces with health, education, protection, governance and humanitarian emergency programs.

It is the oldest and largest independent NGO for children in the world, which works for the defense and promotion of children’s rights, with a presence in more than 120 countries with aid and development programs.
