Judicial independence should not be opposed to the appointment of judges: Esquivel

Judicial independence cannot be a pretext for opposing changes in the way judges are appointed, since citizen participation through popular vote will provide them with even more legitimacy and trust, said the Minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Yasmín Esquivel Mossa.

Participating in a Forum for the Analysis of Judicial Reform, held in the state of Querétaro, he said that the way judges are appointed should not affect the oath and respect for the Constitution that they swear when taking office, and that Mexicans have the right to have justice administered to them by an independent, responsible, impartial and prudent judge.

He explained that all the changes and transformations inherent to the reform have the objective of ensuring that justice reaches all Mexicans, so that no person is left without access to justice and for this, the method of selection of judges must be an appropriate design, compatible with the judicial career and the popular vote.

Esquivel stressed that the important thing is to raise the rights of workers established in laws and general working conditions to constitutional status, in addition to suitability and gradualness, and respect for labor rights, for the peace of mind of workers and their families.
