The Board of Directors of the Athens Bar Association decided to hold a referendum on the division of the Court of First Instance of Athens and the establishment of 5 regional Courts of First Instance in the Prefecture of Attica from the beginning of the new judicial year, on September 16, 2024.

The lawyers of Athens are protesting the changes brought by the new judicial charter which is expected to be introduced for a vote in the Parliament. At yesterday’s meeting of the Board of Directors of the DSA it was decided:

* The holding of a referendum on the Lawyers’ Code (article 138 par. 3) as the DSA had decided in June 2018 in response to the legislative initiative of the then SYRIZA government in office Stavrou Kontoni for the division of the Court of First Instance of Athens, and

*Abstention from all political affairs on Monday 22/4/2024 as well as on the day of the hearing of bodies in the Parliament.

The referendum on whether the lawyers of Athens accept the creation of regional courts of first instance in accordance with the Government’s legislative initiative, will be held by secret ballot from next Monday 22.4.2024 until M. Monday 29.4.2024 (when the result), both by electronic means and by physical presence.
