A judge spared Lady Gaga the payment of the reward of 500,000 dollars (approximately 476,000 euros) which she had promised to offer to anyone who brought back her stolen dogs.
Ill-gotten wealth never benefits, and every promise must not be kept. These are the lessons to be learned, after Lady Gaga, this Monday, won a legal battle linked to the theft in 2021 of her two French bulldogs, Koji and Gustav. Judge Holly Fujie of the Los Angeles County Superior Court ruled in her favor, following a trial which saw the “Poker Face” singer accused of not having kept her promises. to pay a $500,000 reward “no questions asked” for the return of his dogs.
Lady Gaga will therefore ultimately not have to pay this sum to Jennifer McBride, who had certainly returned her stolen dogs, but was subsequently revealed to be involved in the theft. The latter had attempted to sue Lady Gaga to obtain the reward money, claiming in addition $1.5 million in damages for breach of contract, fraud by false promise and fraud by misrepresentation. In the complaint, she claimed that Lady Gaga never intended to pay the reward.

NBC reports that the woman explained in court that although she knew the dogs were stolen when she took possession of them, she did so only to ensure their protection and safe return. The court found that even if “his motivation was to protect the bulldogs (and also to collect $500,000), this alleged motivation in no way negated his guilt in having received the bulldogs knowing that they were stolen property.”
Lady Gaga’s bulldogs were stolen at gunpoint in February 2021, while they were walking around Hollywood with their walker, Ryan Fischer. At the time, Lady Gaga was filming abroad. She had offered a reward of $500,000 “no questions asked” on social media in exchange for the return of her dogs. Two days after the theft, Jennifer McBride returned the bulldogs to a Los Angeles police station and claimed the reward.
NBC reports that three men and two alleged accomplices, including Jennifer McBride, have been charged in connection with the robbery. It was established that the woman had known at least two of her co-conspirators for years before the crime.
