What was that again?
In 2015 it turned out that Volkswagen was manipulating mass emissions tests of cars with software. Thanks to the software, a car ‘knew’ whether it was being tested in a lab or when it was driving on the road. The actual emissions of harmful substances were much higher than tests suggested.
It resulted in a major riot, which has already cost Volkswagen tens of billions of euros. CEO Martin Winterkorn resigned. In the US, another Volkswagen driver was even sentenced to seven years in prison. The word ‘cheating software’ became in 2015 the Van Dale Word of the Year.
An estimated 11 million cars have been sold with the software worldwide. According to Car Claim, this concerns 170,000 motorists in the Netherlands. Car manufacturers such as Fiat Chrysler and Daimler were later also caught using the software. Numerous claims are still pending against them.
