Feb 16 (Reuters) – A grand jury in Georgia found that several witnesses lied under oath during an investigation into former U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn his defeat in the state’s 2020 election, according to excerpts from its final report released Thursday.
The grand jury also concluded that there was no widespread election fraud, despite Trump’s claims, and delivered recommendations on the allegations to prosecutors, the document showed.
Those recommendations will remain sealed for now, pursuant to a judge’s order.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney allowed three parts of the special grand jury report to be released: the introduction, the conclusion and a section setting out concerns that some witnesses may have lied under oath.
McBurney said the report included “a list of who should (or shouldn’t) be charged.” But the judge ruled that those details would be kept secret for now out of concern that the people named have not been given a proper opportunity to defend themselves.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis opened an investigation shortly after Trump called a Georgia state official in January 2021 asking him to “find” enough votes to declare the state’s incumbent Republican the winner. , instead of Democrat Joe Biden.
Trump, who launched a new campaign for the White House in 2024, has made false claims of fraud in the 2020 election. The former president denies wrongdoing and accused Willis of attacking him for political reasons.
The Georgia investigation is one of several threatening Trump, including investigations by the US Department of Justice into allegations that Trump withheld classified material after leaving office, as well as his efforts to invalidate the results of the 2020 election.
