Judge for Beo: “The term ‘monkey’ is an expression of racist prejudice” – 2024-03-04 17:53:10

The president of Volos Achilles Beos was punished with a three-month suspension from the stadiums for the expression “the monkey fell by itself” about the Kifissia striker Andrea Tetei.

In the reasoning of the 23 pages, the sports judge Anastasios Datskos, points out that the characteristic “monkey” is a “racist practice and is reprehensible and controllable”, while at another point he states that “the term “monkey” is not in itself racist, however it can be used to insult people of specific ethnic groups and in particular people of African descent. Therefore the use of the term monkey addressed to these people is an expression of racist prejudices is unacceptable and constitutes discrimination. That is, if one calls a monkey penalty, there is certainly no racist connotation to the expression in question, as it refers to the fact of the alleged penalty, but if one calls a dark-skinned monkey-man, as in this case, then one is projecting a racial symbolism with a racist connotation. Therefore there is no doubt, as confirmed by most decisions of the UEFA disciplinary committees, that the designation “monkey” targets black footballers and insults their dignity because of the color of their skin.
