In January, the process begins so that 16,402 lawyers, of the 31,876 in El Salvador, participate in the selection processes that will be carried out by the Federation of Lawyers Associations of El Salvador (FEDAES) and the National Council of the Judiciary (CNJ ) with a view to applying to be a magistrate of the Supreme Court of Justice (CSJ).
A list of 30 candidates will come out from the FEDAES and the CNJ that will be presented to the Legislative Assembly on April 21. A subcommission should be created so that the deputies study the profiles of the candidates and can elect five magistrates for the CSJ who would take office on July 1.
On June 30, 2021, five magistrates of the Supreme Court of Justice will terminate their functions: Doris Luz Rivas Galindo (presiding magistrate of the Criminal Chamber), José Armando Pineda Navas (presiding magistrate of the CSJ and Constitutional Chamber), Ovidio Bonilla Flores (magistrate of the Civil Chamber), José Roberto Argueta (magistrate of the Criminal Chamber) and Elsy Dueñas Lovos (presiding magistrate of the Administrative Litigation Chamber).
Lawyers who wish to participate must comply with the requirements established in article 176 of the Constitution of the Republic: “to be Salvadoran by birth, of the secular state, over 40 years old, a lawyer of the Republic, of notorious morality and competence. To have performed a Magistracy of Second Instance for six years or a Judiciary of First Instance for nine years, or have obtained authorization to practice the profession of lawyer for at least ten years before their election; be in the enjoyment of the rights of citizenship and have it been in the six years prior to the performance of his position “. In addition, they must comply with the internal regulations of both institutions.
Election Fedaes
The president of the FEDAES, Joaquín Rodrigo García, said that he will call on January 11 so that interested lawyers who meet the requirements can participate.
According to information provided by the CNJ, the FEDAES has until February 26 to present its final results of the 15 most voted candidates in its elections and with them form the list.
CNJ election
The CNJ will make its call on January 5. Interested lawyers must be interviewed by their magistrates. This period will be between March 1 and 12.
The list of the 15 candidates best evaluated in their interviews should be finalized on March 23. On April 21, the CNJ will present to the Legislative Assembly the list of the 30 most suitable candidates and it will be the new legislature that will elect the new magistrates.

The CNJ published on September 28 in the newspapers with the largest circulation in the country, the list of lawyers who will be able to participate in the elections for magistrates in 2021.
Delivery
On December 22, the CNJ delivered the final list of the special registry of eligible lawyers and the electoral roll for the process of selecting candidates for magistrates for the 2021-2030 period.
Process
The convocation process for both institutions will take place in January. On February 26, the FEDAES must deliver its list to the CNJ. For its part, the CNJ should have its list on March 23. You must join both lists and present them at the Assembly on April 21.
