Residents of the former Palace of Justice on the Prinsengracht have not been able to stop the conversion into a luxury hotel. The residents took a case because they are afraid that the planned increase of the roof will, among other things, remove their sunlight.

The residents also fear that the renovation will ruin their view and hotel guests would soon be able to peek inside. That is why they asked the court to withdraw the permit from the municipality for the renovation, but to no avail.
Research has shown that the raising of the roof has only a minor influence on the insolation of the surrounding houses. ‘Moreover, this is simply part of living in a big city’, the court finds.
Rosewood Hotel
The building, which served the court for more than 175 years, was bought by Chinese investors for around € 60 million to convert it into the ‘Rosewood Hotel’. After the opening, the hotel wants to focus mainly on travelers from the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India & China).
Last year AT5 took a look at the building together with architect Ray Kentie, which will house a total of 136 hotel rooms. “My goal is to bring back the classicist style of the former court in the future hotel,” Kentie said at the time.
The Rosewood Hotel should open its doors to guests within a few years.
