Judge Kathleen Cardone approved the transfer of Ismael El Mayo Zambada to the Brooklyn Court in New York. This also suspended the criminal proceedings that the alleged founder of the Sinaloa Cartel was pursuing in Texas.
The decision comes after the U.S. government initiated proceedings against Zambada García before the Eastern District Court of New York, headed by Judge Brian Cogan, where the Mexican drug lord faces several formal charges against him for his ties to the Sinaloa Cartel’s criminal activities.
According to court file EP:12-CR-849(2)-KC corresponding to the case “United States of America vs Ismael Zambada Garcia a/k/a ‘Mayo’”, Judge Cardone granted the transfer to New York without opposition.
He also ordered the suspension of criminal proceedings. The May faced in the Western District Court of Texas after the US government requested that Zambada complete his proceedings before Judge Cogan, who previously sentenced the other leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, to life in prison.
In addition, Cardone supported the government’s request to “suspend the provisions of the Speedy Trial Law and excuse the Defendant from appearing at any hearing in this case while the Defendant remains in the EDNY (Eastern District Court of New York),” the court ruling states.
