Chief Justice of the East Jakarta District Court, Suparman Nyompa, asked the defendant Rizieq Shihab take off serban which has a flag image Palestine and Indonesia in the East Jakarta District Court courtroom, Thursday (20/5).
This happened before the trial of Rizieq’s plea reading in the crowd case in Petamburan, Central Jakarta and Megamendung, Bogor.
Before the panel of judges entered the courtroom, Rizieq was seen wearing a turban that had Palestinian and Indonesian flags in the courtroom. It is not clear why Rizieq wore the turban in the courtroom.
However, Rizieq was immediately ordered to remove the turban when the panel of judges entered the courtroom.
The panel of judges considered that the courtroom could be clean and neutral from certain attributes in order to maintain the spirit of the trial.
“That uses Palestinian attributes, right? I mean this, because we keep the dignity of the trial. This is a lot of news. We sympathize with the events there. But this is a trial in our country,” said the Chairman of the Judicial Council Suparman Nyompa.
“We will clean up at the trial that the problem should not be brought inside, maybe it can be replaced,” he continued.
The judge said that Rizieq could later use these attributes outside the trial. “Later it can be used outside the court,” said the Judge.
Seeing the judge’s request, Rizieq then released it. He put the turban on the table of his attorney which is located on the right side.
“Thank you, the panel of judges,” said Rizieq.
It is known, the escalation of Israeli attacks on the Palestinian Gaza Strip has increased since the last week of Ramadan. As of last Wednesday (19/5), Israel claimed to have killed 130 Hamas personnel and 30 members of the Islamic Jihad militia.
Medics in the Gaza Strip say so far 217 Palestinians have died as a result of the Israeli attacks, including 61 children and 36 women.
