Judge Amaury Martínez Postpones Operation Medusa Trial Hearing

The judge of the Second Investigative Court of the National District, Amaury Martínez, postponed until Tuesday, January 23, the audience of the preliminary trial in the corruption case known as Operation Medusa.

The audience was scheduled for 9:00 in the morning, with the purpose that the accused Happy Antonio Rosario Labrado appears with a new lawyer, since his defender resigned. The judge gave him until Monday at 3:00 in the afternoon.

This legal process has been stalled since December 15, after the First Criminal Chamber of the Court of Appeal rejected the challenge against Martínez presented by public defender Dukaski Payano Taveras, representative of Félix Antonio Rosario.

It is recalled that this corruption case involves the former Attorney General of the Republic, Jean Alain Rodríguez, and 62 other individuals and legal entities.

The Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) recently rejected the declination due to illegitimate suspicion against the plenary session of the Court of Appeal of the National District, presented by Payano Taveras, which prevented a chamber of that jurisdiction from hearing the challenge against Judge Amauri.

The Medusa case, which will complete three years in court in June, is still in the preliminary stage, involving 41 individuals, former officials and businessmen, as well as 22 companies, accused of defrauding the Dominican State of more than 6,000 million pesos during the administration of the former attorney (2016-2020).

Due to the large number of defendants, some with up to three lawyers, the hearings are held in the Court of Civil and Commercial Appeal of the National District.
