The professionals of the Juan Ramón Jiménez University Hospital maintain a outstanding positioning in clinical research, as revealed by their participation in a total of 130 studies active clinical research teams today. The studies in the hospital center have a consolidated upward trend in recent years. Their purpose is to obtain a health benefit for their population.
The hospital has released this information coinciding with the celebration of the International Clinical Trial Day, a key tool to investigate new treatments and achieve the advancement of medicine. Not surprisingly, clinical research in the last sixty years has made it possible for life expectancy in Europe to have increased by about 10 years.
With them it is about searching solutions to diseases from very different areas. In the case of the Juan Ramón Jiménez University Hospital, among the most active research areas, those related to diseases of the Digestive System, Cardiology, Internal Medicine and Oncology stand out. All this, with the support of FABIS as the managing foundation of the Research in Huelva and the support of the Fundación Progreso y Salud of the Ministry of Health.
Clinical research provides hope to many people. Participating a patient in a clinical trial can help improve the course of the disease itself, make the patient feel better, or live longer. In case the investigated treatment is shown to be better than the existing ones, the patients who have participated in the trial will be the first to benefit. All this within compliance with Good Clinical Practices and the quality standards that regulate it, to guarantee the rights, safety and well-being of those who participate in it.
For this reason, the professionals of the Juan Ramón Jiménez University Hospital work on projects promoted, both by the pharmaceutical sector, in order to facilitate access to new innovative treatments, such as by the public sector, to improve the results and interventions of clinical practice, all within the framework of the new R&D strategy in Andalusian Health.
Among them, the great increase in active studies in the departments of Cardiology (34), Digestive System (18), especially in Crohn’s disease and inflammatory bowel diseases; and Internal Medicine (10).
In the case of Internal Medicine, the 7 studies referring to Amyloidosis, known as Andrade’s Disease or Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy, a rare disease endemic in the province. These studies are carried out in collaboration with other units of the center and will undoubtedly lead to a better understanding of the disease and the discovery of new therapies to alleviate its effects.
In relation to oncological diseases, there are eight active clinical research studies that focus on the search for an effective treatment and, of course, a cure for different types of cancer, with the largest bulk of these active studies taking those referring to breast cancer.
On the other hand, there has been a strong increase in the initiative of the researchers of the center Independent Clinical Research Studies, with weighty proposals that are transformed into relevant clinical studies. In this line, 11 studies are active, distributed among the different services.
Within clinical studies, not everything is medicine. In this sense, Clinical Investigations with Medical device, with some speed, it is gaining relevance, with an upward trend, which currently has 22 active investigations with medical devices, 18 of them in Cardiology.
Another strong point in clinical research, and where it is working hard, are the Lines of investigation, whose objective is to generate new medical knowledge that helps in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases. At the Juan Ramón Jiménez University Hospital there are a total of 132 active Research Lines, an amount that is expected to increase before the end of this year. Likewise, the center has 11 research groups that focus on the study of a specific pathology through various projects and clinical research studies.
In Andalusia there is a Voluntary Registry of people interested in participating in Clinical Trials, ReVECA where basic identification and health data are collected from people who are interested in participate voluntarily in clinical trials in Andalusia, both as a healthy volunteer and as a patient volunteer.
