Around 12 years ago, in 2009, Roger Federer faced a youngster from Argentina, 21-year-old Juan Martin Del Potro, in the final of the US Open. The big surprise: Del Potro won the final in five sets and won his first Grand Slam title. The tennis world is practically open to him, and there is even talk of the new superstar.
–
But the hoped-for world career does not materialize. Injuries are to blame – some of them. Just about a year after his title, he had surgery on his wrist in May 2010. From then on, a story of suffering begins that can be traced back to his wrist again and again. In 2014, the Argentine had to undergo another wrist operation, which caused problems again – the season ended. In the next season, 2015, Del Potro will be able to complete two tournaments. But even then, your wrist slackens.

Next big injury shock
In 2016, however, he is fighting his way back. The Argentine finds his game again after his comeback and even reached the final at the US Open in 2018 – for the first time in nine years. But he loses the game against Novak Djokovic and not only that, a few weeks after the defeat, Del Potro breaks his kneecap. And – slowly the bad luck with injuries can no longer be believed – it gets worse. Shortly after his comeback, he breaks his right kneecap again.
–
Then it gets quiet around him for the time being. Three interventions that follow do not bring the desired improvement. Now the 32-year-old announces the next terrifying news for his fans on his Instagram page: “We tried conservative therapy, but the pain is still there”. The current 123 of the ATP ranking now announces a fourth operation, a next attempt to save his injured knee: “My doctor knows that I want to play tennis again and attend the Olympic Games. So we agreed that the operation should be carried out as soon as possible ».

His father passed away in January
The last few months have been tough for the Argentine. In addition to worries about injuries, his father died in January at the age of 63. Del Potro makes no secret of the fact that time has been very tough: “Of course the last few weeks have not been easy for me. Everything has been so difficult since my father’s death. ” Nevertheless, the 1.98 meter tall fighter looks ahead: “I also feel the power that he sends me from above. I had that day that I woke up and called the doctor. I knew I had to try again. ” Hopefully his kneecap will join in as well. (rij)
