Juan Martin del Potro Prepares for US Open Comeback with Exhibition Tournament in China

After revealing his promise to return to professional tennis to play one last US Open in the preview of the World Cup in Qatar 2022, Juan Martin del Potro announced that he will participate in an exhibition tournament in China, which will serve as preparation for the Grand Slam that begins on Monday, August 28.

In February 2022, after the defeat against Federico Delbonis at the ATP 250 in Buenos Aires, Del Potro said goodbye to tennis with constant knee and wrist injuries as the main reason. However, the emotion aroused by the last World Cup in Qatar led him to dream of participating in the next US Open, a tournament that he managed to win in 2009 by beating Roger Federer in the final, breaking the hegemony of the Swiss, who it has won five consecutive editions since 2004.

“I made a promise: if Argentina won the World Cup I would try to play the US Open. Now Messi and the team put me in training. I still have a lot of pain. Before Qatar I didn’t have it in mind, but now I think about it a lot” he assured then.

Without official confirmation, his return to tennis at the end of June, despite being an exhibition tournament, shows the intention of his preparation for August. “I hope to meet all my fans in China and let’s make this event an incredible experience for everyone. See you soon!” the tennis player from Tandil commented in an audiovisual statement.

Chinese tennis players and figures such as Marat Safin, Carlos Moya, David Ferrer will also participate in the tournament in the return of tennis to China, since since 2019, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, an official tournament has not been held in the asian country.
