The spouses Juan Carlos Marrufo and María Auxiliadora Delgado have been detained for five years and six months after having been convicted for family ties with Osman Delgado Tabosky, a retired military officer and in exile who in 2018 was accused of being one of those responsible for the drone attack on Nicolás Maduro.
On March 19, 2019, officials from the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence (Dgcim) raided his home in Carabobo, while trying to find Osman, who had been residing in the United States since before the attack.
Mary Help of Christians is Osman’s sister, and her relatives say that this was reason enough to be arrested along with her husband five years ago, when She was in the midst of planning IVF to have children with her husband.
When they were transferred to Caracas, the 1st Control Court accepted the charge of criminal association and financing of terrorism.
On October 2 of that same year they were released from prison, despite having a release order dated June 7. When they were transferred to Valencia in a DGCIM vanThey were forced to get off at a toll booth and then arrested by members of the Special Action Forces (FAES).
This time, the court in his case accepted five charges: terrorism, treason, criminal association, attempted homicide, intentional homicide qualified as executed with treachery and futile and ignoble motives. In addition, were sentenced to 30 years in prison.
From then on, his defense has tried to prove the innocence of the political prisoners, all without success. From that date until April 2024 María Auxiliadora and Juan Carlos were held in the detention center of the General Directorate of Military Counterintelligence in Boleíta, Caracas.
On April 10 of this year, María Auxiliadora was transferred to the National Institute for Female Orientation (Inof) center in Caracas and Juan Carlos to El Rodeo I prison, in Miranda.
Amnesty International issued precautionary measures for both, and also denounced this year that the prison conditions in El Rodeo I include solitary confinement for the first 30 days of custody, hooded family members during their visits, sleeping on concrete beds, attending trials by video conference and without legal representation, and lack of access to drinking water and basic hygiene items.
Several NGOs have reported that the couple’s health conditions have deteriorated in prison, and that they have not received adequate medical care. Marrufo Capozzi suffers from severe hypertension, as does his wife, and a thyroid nodule.
Since the couple has Italian and Spanish nationality, the Foreign Ministries of these countries have asked on more than one occasion to mediate for their release, however, Venezuelan justice has refused to give in to an agreement.
