Juan Carlos Formell, Son of Los Van Van Founder and Accomplished Bassist, Dies at 59

Juan Carlos Formell, the son of Juan Formell, the founder of Los Van Van, died on May 26 at the age of 59, after suffering a heart attack while playing bass in the orchestra.

Formell, a Cuban bassist, guitarist and composer who has lived in New York since 2004, was in full concert when he began to feel unwell, and had to leave the stage and was taken to a nearby hospital where he died.

The concert had to be interrupted, but half an hour later it was resumed with another bass player.

Born in Havana in 1964, Juan Carlos Formell studied music at the Alejandro García Caturla and Amadeo Roldán conservatories in Havana and completed his training at the National Art School of Cuba.

He was a renowned instrumentalist, accompanist of several Cuban jazz figures such as Emiliano Salvador, Guillermo Fragoso and Joseíto González, director of the emblematic Rumbavana Orchestra.

In 1999 he recorded his debut album Songs from a Little Blue House, for the American record label Wicklow Records, a production that was nominated for the Granmy Awards.

Throughout his career, he recorded five record productions.

Later, he joined Los Van Van, where he served as bassist until the moment of his death.
