JR Smith has been one of the most controversial players in the NBA in the last 10 years due to his attitude on the court and also for his problems off the pitch with parties and alcohol.
He is currently a golf player at North Carolina A&T State University and in an interview he criticized the mentality of NBA players in which they prefer to spend money on eccentricities than on communities.
“We are trained and have such an ingrained Eurocentric mentality that we only care about ourselves, for myself and mine. I’m not going to help anyone else,” Smith said.
“What bank is going to say no to us? We have what it takes to build everything for our community. To build gyms, community centers, start leagues and championships. So what stops us? We have the money, but we don’t have the mentality,” said the ex-NBA.
Smith further noted that players would rather go to a strip club than spend the money to feed people in their neighborhood.
“We’d rather go and throw away $60,000 in a strip club than go out and feed 2,500 people in the neighborhood. I myself was able to feed my entire community up to 10 times with the money I spent on fines for being late for the bus.”
Smith recounted that after winning the title with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 he suffered from depression and expressed that he felt something was missing, so he entered the world of drugs and alcohol.
“For a long time I went into depression because I was not able to find what I was missing. We go to strip clubs, we get high we deceive people and many times people die. That is what we glorify and millions and millions of dollars are invested in it.”
