Real Madrid striker Luka Jovic has gone deep through the dust after not following any quarantine rules imposed by the Serbian government. Nevertheless, the Serbian international emphasizes that there is no deliberate error. He says he’s been misinformed.
Serbian Minister of the Interior, Nebojsa Stefanovic, lashed out Thursday at “sports millionaires who flout the rules”. Without mentioning names, he meant the 22-year-old Jovic.
On social media, images of Jovic had previously surfaced at the birthday party of his girlfriend Sofija Milosevic. He has also been seen on the street several times in the Serbian capital Belgrade, while he should have been quarantined.
After a Real Madrid basketball player had previously tested positive for the corona virus, both the basketball team and the football team – including Jovic – were quarantined for two weeks. Both teams train at the same accommodation.
However, Jovic flew back to Serbia, where according to national rules he should have been quarantined for 28 days. The police in Serbia already opened an investigation. According to the player himself, who was bought from Eintracht Frankfurt for 60 million euros last summer, the debt is largely not with him.

‘I have been tested negative’
In a message on Instagram, Jovic says that he has been tested negative for the corona virus in Spain and that he subsequently had permission from Real Madrid to fly back to Serbia.
“Once in Serbia I was tested negative again,” writes Jovic. “I am sorry that certain people were so unprofessional after not giving me the right instructions. In Spain I was allowed to go to the supermarket and the pharmacy during quarantine. Apparently this is not allowed here.”
Jovic also takes a critical look at himself. “I am sorry to be the subject of discussion, but it must be about other things in these difficult times. The important people in this crisis are the doctors and other medical personnel.”
“I would like to express my support to them and to all the other people who suffer from the conora virus, although I realize that it is inexcusable to do so now.”

The coronavirus in short
- The coronavirus mainly spreads through sneezes and cough drops. The virus can be transmitted directly from person to person or (for a limited time) through surfaces such as door handles.
- An infected person infects two to three others on average. Precautions are necessary to contain this.
- The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
- Nearly all deaths involve the elderly or other frail, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
