Jovana Damnjanovic winner leads Bayern Munich past SGS Essen

Bayern Munich topped SGS Essen 2-1 to stay at the top of the Frauen Bundesliga. It was a big win for the Bavarians, as the table in the league is currently very close! First and sixth place are separated by only three points.

Match Highlights

Bayern Frauen got the match started quickly with a goal from Klara Bühl in the 8th minute. Saki Kumagai played a nice ball over the top into the path of Bühl, and she blasted it past the goalkeeper for the lead. Maike Berentzen quickly equalized for Essen in the 14th minute after a brilliant counterattack.

Jovana Damnjanovic scored the winner in the 51st minute for Bayern. It’s her first goal in the Frauen Bundesliga since June 28, 2020! Hopefully, she’ll be able to use this tremendous moment as a springboard for the rest of the season.

Coach Jens Scheuer rotated a bit in this one ahead of a busy match at the weekend. Giulia Gwinn was rested completed in favor of Hanna Glas, while Lina Magull and Lea Schüller didn’t feature at all until the second.

Bayern will be back on the field this Wednesday when the travel to France to face Lyon in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Then, next Saturday, there is a HUGE league match when the Bavarians host Wolfsburg at the FC Bayern Campus.
